Fifth Cinema + Panel Discussion (15*)

Chronic Youth Film Festival 2026

two hands framing an image

Nguyễn Trinh Thi interrogates the impact of official histories and international viewpoints on Vietnam, offering a powerful new vision of film form that confronts the limits of filmic representation.

“I am a filmmaker, as you know.”

Beginning with Māori filmmaker Barry Barclay’s quiet statement, Fifth Cinema eschews voice in favour of the written word, juxtaposing moving images of the filmmaker’s daughter with archival images of Vietnamese history. The film leads the viewer through a narrative of indigeneity, colonialism and its resulting impact on representations of Vietnam.

The film will be followed by a discussion alongside ethnomusicologist and filmmaker Professor Barley Norton and contemporary artist Duong Thuy Nguyen, engaging with ideas of contested history and representation.
