Project a Black Planet

Tickets for Friday's session have now sold out and there will be no tickets available on the door. You can still book tickets to the exhibition here, open until Sun 6 Sep.

These viewing sessions have been developed to provide Black-identifying audiences with dedicated time and space to engage with Project a Black Planet and its themes.

Book a session to explore the impact of Pan-Africanism on artistic and cultural production from the 1920s to the present, through over 250 works – from paintings and installations to posters, journals, and film. The exhibition presents work produced across Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, North America and Western Europe, from artists including Chris Ofili, Marlene Dumas and Claudette Johnson.

While Pan-Africanism has long been recognised as a galvanising force in 20th-century global history, Project a Black Planet is the first major exhibition to consider both its influence on visual art and culture, and the critical role of artists in shaping Pan-African visions.

FAQs

What do we mean by Black or Black-identifying?
Anyone of Black African, African-Caribbean, African-Latinx, African-American and Black British heritage, including mixed-Black heritage.

What is a Black audience viewing?
This is an exclusive viewing session of Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica, Barbican Art Gallery's major international exhibition examining the influence of Pan-Africanism on artistic and cultural production. Alongside the exhibition's rich programme of events, these gallery sessions have been developed to provide Black audiences with dedicated time and space to engage with the exhibition and its themes. Shaped by a belief in the value of slower, more reflective encounters with art, the sessions offer an opportunity to spend time with the works, ideas and histories presented in the exhibition, encouraging reflection, conversation and connection.

Can I attend one of these sessions if I’m not Black?
While the intention of these sessions is to create a space for as many Black audience members as possible, nobody with a ticket will be questioned or turned away.

We thank you in advance for supporting these events as we create an opportunity for a community to come together to experience and enjoy the exhibition. All ticket holders will be asked to adhere to our zero-tolerance policy.

You can book a ticket during other times of the exhibition here.
