Exhibition tour with Gabriele Uboldi - Escuela de guías (Guides School) programme

Beatriz González

A room filled with paintings on furniture pieces.

González founded the Escuela de guías (Guides School) at Bogotá’s Museum of Modern Art (MAMBO) in the 1970s. Join participants from our own Guides School as they lead tours of the exhibition.

Alongside her artistic practice, Colombian artist Beatriz González also worked as an educator. She set up a pedagogical initiative at the Museum of Modern Art (MAMBO) in Bogotá in the 1970s, bringing together people from different disciplines including artists, educators, students, and writers. The group met to study, discuss and generate mediation methodologies in response to exhibitions hosted by MAMBO. At the end of each cycle, group members left empowered to deliver guided tours and workshops across the museum.

Inspired by González's own expansive approach to art education, the curatorial team for the Barbican’s Beatriz González exhibition organised a nine-month programme that mirrored González’s Escuela de guías with colleagues from across the Barbican, exploring the artist's practice through collective reading and dialogue.
