Abolição (18)

Project a Black Planet

A man sitting down

An epic documentary exploring the histories of slavery and the continued legacy and impact on Black Brazilians today.

Zózimo Bulbul (A Deusa Negra) was an actor and filmmaker who spent his career fighting to increase the visibility of Afro-Brazilian culture. In Abolição, he used his platform to mark 100 years since the abolition of slavery in Brazil, which was outlawed by the Lei Áurea on 13 May 1888.

The film travels the length of the country, asking ordinary people what abolition actually meant to them, beyond a historical context. What could easily feel like a daunting task becomes, in Bulbul's hands, a remarkable journey full of life, rebellion and resistance.

The screening will feature a recorded Introduction from Janaína Oliveira.
