Prime Minister (12A)

Parent and Baby Screening

A documentation of  Jacinda Ardern's five years as New Zealand's Prime Minister, her leadership, gun law reforms, pandemic response, and the birth of her child while in office.

In August 2017, in the lead-up to national elections, Jacinda Ardern unexpectedly became New Zealand’s opposition party leader. She had just turned 37.

Two frenetic months later, she was Prime Minister. Just before the final vote was in, she discovered she was pregnant. She would become only the second head of state in history to give birth while in office.

Directed by Michelle Walshe and Lindsay Utz over a span of seven years, The film features home footage, shot by Ardern’s husband, Clarke Gayford. Intimately presented, this is a rare chance to see a portrait of struggles in the seat of power, as the contrast of private and public highlights a widening chasm between the two halves of her live.
