A woman in red hue

Exclusive to our screens in the UK, Kahlil Joseph transforms his video art installation into a layered examination of the Black experience.

We are delighted to be screening Kahlil Joseph’s debut feature on Sundays across December at the Barbican, inviting you to in to an immersive story that spans 247 years across land and sea.

An unique cinematic experience that mirrors the sonic textures of an album. Adapted from Kahlil Joseph’s highly acclaimed installation shown at the 2019 Venice Biennale, the film interweaves fictional and historical characters to explore the past, present and future.

The film can be viewed as a form of inventory as the collective memories of Black people and the history of the diaspora are brought together.

In its mix of fiction and documentary, the film is inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Saidiya Hartman and others, juxtaposing their ideas with archive material and samples from YouTube, social media, film, TV and journalism.
