Animalia (12A)

A Moroccan woman looks up to the sky, surrounded by mist

A young woman comes to terms with the new, privileged status of her in-laws, in this otherworldly sci-fi drama from Morocco.

Itto (Oumaïma Barid) struggles to put on the airs and graces of her new husbands family and is relieved when they leave on a business trip so she can be herself.

But soon, animals start to behave weirdly, an eerie mist descends and strange clouds filled with green lightning gather sending the country into a state of emergency. Pregnant and panicked, Itto struggles to find her husband and must rely on the help of strangers.

Confronted with the world she thought she had left behind, Itto ends up finding a new kind of freedom.

In this arresting, sci-fi tinged, feature debut Sofia Alaoui offers a dissection of the hypocrisies of Morocco's moneyed classes, the position of women in Muslim societies and limits of wealth.
