Half Six Fix: Tchaikovsky 'Pathétique'

Gianandrea Noseda conducts

Trade your commute for a journey through the human heart, as Gianandrea Noseda conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s overwhelming final symphony.

Tchaikovsky admitted that his Sixth Symphony told a story, but he never put that story into words. He didn’t need to: from its doom-laden opening to the desperate, fading sorrow of its final notes, this is music of vivid, uncompromising emotional force.

That’s why it’s called the ‘Pathétique’ (the closest Russian translation means ‘full of feeling’). Though you’ll still be going home humming the tunes: Tchaikovsky never wrote a piece more full of melody, or scored with such imagination and colour. Our Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda worked in St Petersburg, so he’s just the man to talk you through the symphony – and then to conduct it, on full beam.

This concert is part of Half Six Fix, a different way to experience the LSO, with an introduction to the music from Gianandrea Noseda, and digital programme notes on your phone or device. Grab a drink, take your seat and enjoy the music.

The concert will last approximately 1 hour, with no interval.
