Semyon Bychkov conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s love-fuelled Ninth Symphony – the most profound and contradictory symphony he would write.

Mirroring his own life, Mahler’s last complete work plunges from the exultation of existence into an overwhelming and naked encounter with death. But after plenty of horror and hopelessness across three gigantic movements, Mahler’s love for life shines through the fourth: the composer determined to praise existence despite everything, his own demise included.

Semyon Bychkov, who holds the BBC SO’s Günter Wand Conducting Chair and has a unique way with the contrasting, conflicting and searing emotions of Mahler’s symphonies, marshals the orchestra in this performance of the most profound and contradictory of them all.
