Pretty Yende in recital

with Michele d’Elia

Pretty Yende outside

In her first solo recital at the Barbican, Pretty Yende explores both German romantic song and the sunlit world of Italian bel canto.

Her lustrous, sparkling soprano is as expressive in the rich, emotionally-charged songs of Richard Strauss and the Schumanns as in the endless Neapolitan melody of Donizetti and Tosti. 'It’s not just the sound, the world of music goes much deeper' Yende says. Make no mistake though: it’ll sound magnificent.

Add Yende’s extraordinary stage presence and flair for characterisation – familiar to anyone who’s seen her performing at the Royal Opera House – and this promises to be a song recital with an extra dimension. 'Music has its own language that goes beyond the notes' says Yende. 'And I think the quest is to go to that point, because then it becomes alive, then it becomes memorable'.

This performance will end at approximately 9pm, including a 20 minute interval.

‘Possessed of diamanté tone and a megawatt smile, the young South African soprano Pretty Yende seems to take charge of the stage wherever she goes.‘
