Peppermint Soda (12A)

After the Wave: Young French Cinema in the 1970s

A young girl in school

A refreshing female take on the coming-of-age story, and a sensitive account of a year in the lives of two teenage sisters.

It’s 1963. After an extended summer holiday with their dad on the Normandy coast, 13-year-old Anne and her sister Frédérique, two years older, return to Paris for the start of the school year. Frédérique is out-going, Anne more withdrawn; the film charts them both, at school and at home, across a year of fights, bad grades, crushes, pop records, and friendships lost and found.

In the 1970s, women broke into the French film industry in larger numbers. The first film by a then-unknown 29-year-old director Diane Kurys, Peppermint Soda was a triumphant success – the year’s highest-grossing film in France and winner of the Prix Louis Delluc for Best Film.
