Hidden Figures – Lina Wertmüller

Behind the White Glasses

Valerio Ruiz’s poignant portrait of filmmaker Lina Wertmuller is an excellent introduction to her fascinating life and career.

Behind the White Glasses offers invaluable insight into the life of Lina Wertmüller, whose unique work is being celebrated at the Barbican throughout March.

The documentary takes in her early career, working as an assistant director to Federico Fellini on 8 ½, to her run of critical successes in the 1970s, including The Seduction of Mimi, Love and Anarchy, Swept Away and her masterpiece, Seven Beauties, for which she became the first woman to be nominated for the Best Director Oscar®.

The documentary features invaluable contributions from a host of admirers, including Martin Scorsese, Sophia Loren, Harvey Keitel and Nastassja Kinski.

Following this screening, director Valerio Ruiz, Wertmüller's sometimes assistant director and right-hand man, will be interviewed by Dr Valentina Signorelli, visiting lecturer at University of Westminster.
