Fine Art and Health & Safety Technician
Starting Salary: £30,440 per annum, inclusive of Inner London Weighting (dependent on skills and experience) to £34,240
Permanent, full time
We’re seeking an experienced Fine Art Technician to provide assistance to the Visual Arts Gallery Production Manager in all aspects of installation and de-installation of exhibitions in the Barbican Arts Galleries, the centre’s foyers, and off-site as required. This is a development role for an experienced Art Technician with an interest in Health and Safety procedures.
The Barbican is a world renowned multi-disciplinary art centre. The visual arts are crucially important to Barbican’s success. The Art Gallery is dedicated to the presentation of exhibitions covering modern and contemporary art, design/architecture and photography. The Curve is devoted to the commissioning of large scale site specific installations by leading international contemporary artists. The Barbican aims to serve both artists and audiences and excels in the presentation of exhibitions that are thoughtful, curatorially ambitious and often focus on timely reassessments and inter-disciplinary practice.
This role will be responsible for contributing to the highest standard of museum practice in relation to installation, packing and preparing works for transport and exhibition maintenance, as well as supporting the Production Manager in the areas of health and safety processes and procedures, risk management, CDM and COSHH regulations. Additional training in these areas can be provided.
Working with the Production Manager, this role will also be responsible for supervising an installation team of around 20 people.
We are looking for someone with good practical knowledge of H&S legislation and best practice, including the health and safety at work act, and preferably with experience of monitoring, enforcing and reviewing this in a gallery environment. You will have sound practical knowledge of risk management and risk assessment in relation to temporary exhibitions in particular, as well as knowledge and practical experience of COSHH requirements and procedures.
Extensive knowledge and experience of art handling to museum standards is required for this role.
We offer a wide range of staff benefits including a great pension scheme, season ticket, cycle to work scheme, free access to museums and galleries, discounts on retail, healthcare and on-site cafes and restaurants. You will have access to Employee Assistance Programme, trained Mental Health First aiders and City of London staff networks. We worked hard over the last year to make our office and public spaces Covid-safe and have rigorous safety measures and practices in place to support it.
We are committed to increasing diversity of staff within the Barbican. As an organisation we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences. We are particularly keen to encourage interest from people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+, Black, Asian, and other global majority backgrounds who are currently under-represented within visual arts. In recognising the positive value of diversity, we want to better reflect and understand the communities we exist to serve.
We are members of the Disability Confident Scheme and guarantee to interview all disabled candidates who would like to be considered under this scheme and who meet the minimum essential criteria for the role. We support and provide adjustments for people with disabilities – if you have a disability and need help with the application process please contact us.
