Creative Learning Apprentice (Schools)

Job Type: 18-month fixed term contract

35 hours per week (4 days of work and one day at college)

Salary: £20,570 (Inclusive of London Weighting)

The Barbican is an internationally renowned arts and learning organisation that pushes the boundaries of all major art forms including dance, film, music, theatre, spoken word and visual arts. The Barbican Centre is also Europe’s largest multi-arts and conference venue, home to London’s second largest conservatory, two theatres, two galleries, three cinemas, a concert hall and a range of conference rooms and spaces.

Barbican Creative Learning pioneers new models for creative and cultural learning across the art forms. Our mission, Creative Skills for Life, underpins all aspects of our work and approach in the design and delivery of meaningful and impactful learning experiences. In 2020/21, we delivered 20 digital and physical programmes with over 200 partners, engaging 2,400 participants and reaching an audience of more than 50,000. In order to achieve this, we build partnerships with teachers, artists, young people, schools and community organisations locally, nationally and internationally.

We are looking for people who are passionate about developing a career in the Creative Learning sector and those keen to make positive changes in children and young people’s experience of the arts through arts-based learning programmes and tailored partnerships with underserved schools and specialist educational settings, locally and nationally.  The focus of the position will be working across art forms with a focus on our school programmes.

We are looking for someone who is highly motivate, open-minded, friendly and empathetic. You should be confident in talking to a range of people, especially those who may have never been to the Barbican before or who don’t regularly attend art events. You should have had some experience of working on arts or schools-based projects – whether paid or unpaid, as a leader or a participant.

The successful candidate will be expected to complete the agreed 18 months apprenticeship learning programme and take ownership of the learning process with support from college and the Creative Learning department.

To qualify for this apprenticeship, you will need to be:

  • 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays

If you are a non-UK citizen, you must have permission from the UK government to live in the UK (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship.
