Fixed term contract (24 months)
Full time, 35 hours per week (4 days at the Barbican Centre and 1 day at college)
Starting salary of £19,800 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting)
The Barbican is Europe's largest multi-arts venue. Presenting a diverse range of Art, Music, Theatre, Dance, Film, and External Engagements surrounded by the famous concrete jungle.
Our in-house Conservatory team are recruiting for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join their team in carrying out garden maintenance in and around the Barbican Centre.
The successful candidate will gain valuable knowledge and experience of maintaining a collection of Temperate, Tropical plants and Livestock (two Fishponds pounds and a Terrapin pool) all located within our Conservatory.
You will also be provided with support and guidance to assist you during your educational studies
Full training will be given as part of this apprenticeship which will last for 24 months. The nature of the role requires you to be onsite (the Barbican conservatory) from 06:30am on your working days.
Duties will vary on a day to day basis as directed by management and will include general amenity maintenance duties using hand tools and other seasonal horticultural tasks; such as how to utilise and grow plant knowledge, delivering planting and plant care, assisting members of staff with the day to day maintenance of the collection of temperate and tropical plants, maintaining the conservatory ponds, and general maintenance such as ground preparation for planting, propagation, pruning and potting up.
You will have a keen interest in horticulture and gardening, flexible, hardworking and enjoy working outdoors. An enthusiasm to learn, along with good communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team, following instructions as well as using your own initiative when needed are essential.
Please note the Conservatory is also a venue for numerous and varied events so you must feel comfortable working around members of the public.
To qualify for this apprenticeship opportunity, you will need to be:
- 16 or over by the end of 31 August 2021
- Living in England
- Not in full-time education at the time of applying.
- If you are a non-EEA citizen, you will need to have permission from the UK government to live in the UK (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship.
