Conductor Christopher Hogwood is one of the most influential and distinguished figures in the Early music movement. Through his approach of trying to understand and recreate a composer's original i Intentions he has changed how we hear music of that era, and most importantly thrilled audiences with many, many performances of vitality and excitement.
Hogwood founded the Academy of Ancient Music in 1973 and together they have made more than 200 recordings; he is now their Emeritus Director.
Arianna in Creta is one of Handel's less often performed operas, the reason why something of a mystery. The music has all the drama we would expect from the great Baroque master, the 250th anniversary of whose death the Barbican marks this season.
Pre-concert talk by Berta Joncus 5pm Berta Joncus is Lecturer in Music at St Anne's College and St Hilda's College, Oxford. She regularly reviews recordings for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Music Magazine, specializing in Baroque repertory. In her pre-concert talk she will discuss the different readings that Arianna in Creta at its premiere might have provoked from audiences.
