A young Russian immigrant mother, arriving in America with her son, sets out to find her husband and is forced to work in a sweatshop while she searches for him. The joy of finding him, however, soon turns to anguish when she discovers that he has rejected much of his ethnic culture. Can they find a way to reconcile their differences in this new way of life? With a strong jazz and ragtime style, the score also has a fascinating multicultural element with influences from Klesmer, Irish folk, American honky-tonk, Greek and Middle Eastern music.
