Come and Play!

On Saturday 06 and Sunday 07 November 2010 people of all ages and abilities took part in the Come and Play weekend of free vocal and instrumental workshops at the Barbican and Guildhall School. Thousands of people visited, taking the chance to sing or play a musical instrument for the first time or take existing musical experience in a new direction.

On the Saturday young people explored different genres and styles of music with professional musicians, trying out different instruments and playing along to a classic Laurel and Hardy film. On the Sunday free workshops took place at the Guildhall School, aimed at young people and adults who play an instrument, used to play or had always wanted to play. People played in an ensemble for the first time, tried out the piano and joined a choir for the day.

The weekend was supported by The SHM Foundation, a founding supporter of the Barbican/Guildhall School Creative Learning programme. The Foundation works globally to bring about positive social change through projects in the areas of citizenship, health, education and the arts. As they say, “everyone should have the opportunity to aspire, to create and to get involved with excellence in the arts”.

Leafing aside traditional sponsorship activation, IKEA branched out in their treemendous recent partnership with the Barbican.

As the lead sponsor of the Barbican’s smash hit summer exhibition The Surreal House , IKEA built their own pean to surrealism on the Barbican Sculpture Court. Standing at six meters tall, Surrealistika attracted much curiosity and intrigue during its two weeks at the Centre – featuring in the Metro and London Tonight and sparking the imagination of many Barbican visitors. The sculpture brought together art and design to explore how changes in the environment will affect our future.

IKEA created Surrealistika to draw attention to a major piece of design research the company commissioned into the kitchen of the future. To accompany their sponsorship of the Surreal House, IKEA hosted a panel debate at the Barbican to mark the launch of this research. The evening was a sell-out and gave IKEA the platform to display its talents for innovation and foresight in home design.

Claire Howes, Marketing & PR at IKEA UK & Ireland said:
‘We were absolutely delighted with how last week went so thanks very much again to you and the team for helping us make it such a success.’

Surrealistika tree sculpture was displayed between 12 – 22 August and perfectly demonstrated the Barbican’s ability to work creatively and collaboratively with our funding partners.
