The Dark Heart of Fairy Tales

Early fairytales were visceral, grim and explicitly sexual – and totally inappropriate for children today. Softened through decades of Disney films, the Brothers Grimm’s original intentions seem forgotten, but this series aims to reinvest the fairy tale with its lost primeval vigour.

Exploring adult tales across different genres and geographies, this season has a dark heart full of sensual and fear-provoking visions.

We begin with a rare screening of the silent film, Morozko, and close with an unmissable ScreenTalk with artist Paula Rego.

There are currently no Barbican events in the selected series.
