Magnus Lindberg EXPO (UK premiere) Prokofiev Piano Concerto No 2 Sibelius Symphony No 2 New York Philharmonic Orchestra Alan Gilbert conductor Yefim Bronfman piano
Alan Gilbert's emerging reputation as one of the most remarkable of today's young conductors was sealed with his appointment as music director of the mighty New York Philharmonic, a partnership which began this season.
He is joined by Yefim Bronfman, a pianist whose performances combine remarkable skill with a thoughtful, searching intelligence, and who here tackles Prokofiev's Second Piano concerto. It is a massive piece, in terms of its scope, ambition and the ferocious demands it makes on its soloist – not least in the breathless brilliance of the second movement.
Sibelius Second Symphony was an immediate success, its bold, evocative themes and sensitively-scored instrumental detail revealing what a masterful writer for orchestra the Finnish composer was. Not surprisingly, Magnus Lindberg describes his fellow countryman's influence as important to him; it will be fascinating to hear a new work from this most compelling of contemporary composers in the same programme as Sibelius.
