Oceanic Verses

Oceanic Verses from Beth Morrison Projects on Vimeo.

Devised from folkloric fragments which date as far back as 3000 BC, improvisation, and new music by composer Paola Prestini – named by NPR as one of the Top 100 composers in the world under 40 – Oceanic Verses is a multimedia opera which tells of fading civilizations through a series of tableaux featuring lost songs, rituals and ethnic dialects from the Salento and Sardinian regions of Italy.

A film by Ali Hossaini is projected throughout the performance, immersing the opera’s players and audience in the folkloric landscape that inspired the piece.

His contribution gives the opera a profound sense of place that is impossible with a traditional set.

‘Oceanic Verses made the hair on the back of my neck stand up for the sheer visceral pleasure of the musical language’ Ed Yim, New York Philharmonic

‘An inquisitively progressive piece’ Opera Pulse

‘Renaissance songs, folk melodies that may be even older, and 19th-century popular tunes are all given updated chamber accompaniments that mesh smoothly with Ms. Prestini’s own agreeable linking music’ New York Times
