The revolutionary qualities of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto are announced in the work’s very first bars, which replace the traditional orchestral opening with a reflective solo piano theme. For his First Symphony, Walton turned to his turbulent relationship with Baroness Imma von Doernberg for inspiration; after three emotionally charged movements (including a Scherzo marked ‘with malice’), optimism is recovered in the spirited finale.
This concert also features Edward Nesbit’s Parallels, an LSO Panufnik Young Composers Scheme commission, conducted by winner of the 2010 Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition, Clemens Schuldt. Change of conductor Sir Colin Davis is continuing to recover from a recent illness and sadly has had to withdraw from the concert. The programme will remain the same and we are pleased to announce that Sir John Eliot Gardiner will now lead the Orchestra in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 4 with soloist Elisabeth Leonskaja and Walton’s Symphony No 1.
Regarding his future concerts, Sir Colin remains hopeful that he will be able to return to the podium for his engagement on 5 December. [Notice posted 2 Nov 1pm]
Change of soloist Elisabeth Leonskaja is indisposed and has had to withdraw from this concert. The LSO is very grateful to Sunwook Kim, winner of the 2006 Leeds International Piano Competition, for agreeing to step in at short notice to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 4.
