Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra: Strauss - Also sprach Zarathustra, I. Prelude

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra: Strauss - Also sprach Zarathustra, III. Von der grossen Sehnsucht

The celebrated Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam hold a deserved place at the very pinnacle of international ensembles. A history of remarkable and loyal chief conductors - a mere handful in nearly a century and a quarter - continues with the current incumbent Mariss Jansons. This evening's programme features the orchestral Suite that Strauss created from his highly popular opera Der Rosenkavalier, rich in Viennese Waltz themes, the characters and their predicaments placed into the hands of instrumentalists. The string work Metamorphosen, premiered in 1946, was Strauss's reflection on the wartime destruction of his native Germany, while the much earlier, late 19th-century tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra - immortalised among film lovers by its opening's use in 2001: A Space Odyssey - opens the evening's Straussian celebrations.

'The world's classiest orchestra and conductor: the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with Mariss Jansons.' The Guardian

'Much has been made of Concertgebouw's having been named, in a poll of international critics by Gramophone magazine, the best orchestra in the world. It certainly sounded the part. The strings were rich, the brass radiant, the winds positively creamy. And Jansons, certainly one of the best conductors around, knew exactly how to drive it.' The Washington Post
