Ian McQueen Earthly Paradise (BBC commission: world premiere)

Sir Andrew Davis
conductor
Akiko Suwanai violin
BBC Symphony Chorus

The search for the land where ‘none grow old’ guides the twists and turns of William Morris’s The Earthly Paradise . Ian McQueen’s new work for chorus and large orchestra evokes the poem's extraordinary world, surges with erotic charge, and conjures up Morris’s magical vision of Iceland’s landscape and sagas. Akiko Suwanai, youngest ever winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition and recent soloist at the BBC Proms, performs Mendelssohn’s evergreen Violin Concerto.

Jennifer Pike is no longer able to take part in this concert. We are grateful to Akiko Suwanai, who has agreed to perform in her place at short notice.
