David Robertson Conductor
Gil Shaham Violin

Gil Shaham’s place among today’s great violinists rests secure on foundations of insightful musicianship, breathtakingly beautiful sound and irresistible panache, qualities guaranteed to illuminate Mozart’s joyful Second Violin Concerto and the witty elegance of Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto. He joins forces with his brother-in-law and the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor for tonight’s concert. The programme opens with the world premiere of the complete version of the multi-layered Substratum, created for the BBC SO by Sam Hayden as a constantly evolving construction of kaleidoscopic sounds and orchestral textures.

‘Shaham's playing had a searing intensity, but it was the irrepressible energy he exuded that brought every note so vividly to life.’
