Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 (‘Emperor’)
Shostakovich Symphony No 11 ('The Year 1905')

Stephen Hough

London Symphony Orchestra
Yakov Kreizberg conductor

The Fifth Piano Concerto is Beethoven at his boldest and most grandly heroic, yet it also finds time for a middle movement of hushed, awe-inspiring beauty. Shostakovich’s skill as a film composer stood him in good stead for his Eleventh Symphony, a compelling evocation of the events the 1905 Revolution, ranging from the eerie quiet of an empty Palace Square, to the brutality of the ‘Bloody Sunday’ massacre, to the final re-stirrings of revolutionary anger.
