British clarinettist Michael Collins partners with the Heath String Quartet for one work each by Baermann and Brahms.
For years, Baermann’s Adagio for clarinet and strings was attributed to Wagner. Though five minutes long, it slowly unfolds as one continuous melodic line, to an ever-shifting string accompaniment that feels like it might just go on forever.
By sharp contrast, Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet is distinctly his own. Written shortly before his premature retirement, this is Brahms at his peak. And this work manages to balance his own personality – out in force – with a subtle homage to a predecessor written by Mozart. Just like his model, the final movement is a lively theme and variations to bring this grand chamber work, dedicated to Brahms’ friend Richard Mühlfeld, to a close.
