An evening of deeply moving sitar ragas, performed by one of the most promising artists from a new generation of Indian Classical musicians.
Since garnering an international audience in the days of maestros Ustad Vilayat Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar, the sound of the sitar has captivated the world. This is an opportunity to witness a performance from one of the instrument’s modern masters. Accompanied by tabla and jori player Sukhwinder Singh, Kumar unravels moving ragas with his signature style of fluid melody, bent notes and flurries of virtuosic improvisation.
Picking up the sitar at the age of four, inspired and taught by his father – a student of Ravi Shankar – Niladri Kumar’s career has seen him embrace the versatility and depth of India’s iconic instrument. As well as mastering the classical style, he has experimented with fusion music, notably melding Rock and Indian Classical with Talvin Singh, and has designed the zitar, a hybrid electric guitar-sitar. For this performance, he embraces the traditional sitar style, innovating and breathing new life into the instrument.
