Had he just left us West Side Story, or his work as a conductor, or his inspirational TV lectures on music, Leonard Bernstein’s reputation would be have been secure.

But he did all that as well as play the piano magnificently, compose a superb body of concert-hall and opera-house works, inspire countless generations of young musicians and be the champion of the music of Gustav Mahler in the post-war years.
