Exploring his new fascination with the voice as an instrument, Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson leads an expanded performance of music from his new album, Orphée alongside new soundtrack work and material from across his career.
His first solo album in six years, Orphée draws on elements from his previous recordings; organ, strings, voice and electronics are weaved into mesmeric soundscapes, but he also brings in new ideas and sonic textures. Sampling recordings from Cold War radio broadcasts, and repeating melodic and harmonic patterns throughout the different pieces, Jóhannsson works subtle codes into the music, reflecting on themes of change, rebirth and renewal.
Jóhannsson is perhaps best known for soundtracks to films such as The Theory of Everything, Sicario and The Miners’ Hymns, performed at the Barbican in 2014. Here he'll premiere material from upcoming soundtracks for Danish documentary Good Things Await and American science fiction drama Arrival..
