Lubomyr Melnyk + Murcof & Vanessa Wagner

John Cage, Philip Glass, Arvö Part – there’s a long line of composers who’ve changed the way we think about the humble piano. This double bill brings together artists continuing to put the instrument through its paces – two different takes on ambient, minimal piano music.

Classically trained but deeply influenced by the minimalist movement of the 70s, Lubomyr Melnyk has developed his own unique style of playing the piano. Describing it as ‘continuous music’, his fingers dart across the piano keys at lightning speed to create a cloud of sound, a performance that manages to be dizzying, chaotic and serene all at once.

Opening the concert, a collaboration between Mexican producer Fernando Corona aka Murcof and French pianist Vanessa Wagner filters Classical music through the lens of Electronica. Performing reinterpretations of works by John Cage, Philip Glass, John Adams and more, Wagner’s playing is subtly warped and manipulated live by Murcof, creating brooding and beautiful soundscapes.
