Please note that due to ill health, Brigid Mae Power is unable to perform tonight. There will now be no support act. Efterklang will still be performing at 8.20pm, but doors will open at 7.30pm.
In summer 2015, in the corridors of a Cold War bunker below Copenhagen’s abandoned Municipal Hospital, Efterklang premiered their radical take on the opera genre, co-composed with Karsten Fundal – an immersive experience that led audiences into the depths of the hospital, and through the story of a mysterious underground cult. Now they revive the experience, reworked for the concert hall.
Breaking down the conventions of the opera as a genre, Leaves centres around themes of loss of identity, loss of love and loss of life itself. For this performance, Efterklang are joined by The Happy Hopeless Orchestra and vocalists including legendary Danish opera star Lisbeth Balslev (soprano), Morten Grove Frandsen (countertenor), Katinka Fogh Vindelev (soprano) and Nicolai Elsberg (bass), bringing to life lyrics by poet Ursula Andkjær Olsen.
Carving a path as one of the most successful and progressive Danish bands, Leaves is the latest in a series of experimental projects by Efterklang that includes making films with Vincent Moon, and creating a sound installation in the famous restaurant Noma.
The recording of Leaves is available on Tambourhinoceros now.
