Please note capacity is limited for the symposium and study afternoon, so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. Attendance at the morning session does not guarantee admission to the afternoon session.

The Institute of Musical Research Symposium explore Birtwistle’s music.

The morning will be convened by Professor Jonathon Cross from the University of Oxford.

10.30am - Dr Heather Wiebe (King's College London): 'Birtwistle in Aldeburgh, 1968'
11.10am - Professor Arnold Whittall (Emeritus, King's College London): '"Night's rhythm coming in"- sketching the later Birtwistle'
12pm - Professor Ulrich Mosch (Université de Geneve): 'The composer’s eye: Harrison Birtwistle, Wolfgang Rihm, and the visual arts’
12.40pm - Dr David Beard (Cardiff University): ‘“The mystery of the kiosk composer”: Harrison Birtwistle’s creative processes explained’


The Morning Symposium will be followed by a Study Afternoon in the Fountain Room at 3pm:

Both morning and afternoon sessions will be followed by the showing of a new short film about Harrison Birtwistle made by the young film-maker Tom Mustill, commissioned by Sinfini Music.(approx. 1.20pm and 5.20pm)
