Sakari Oramo brings the BBC SO’s series of Nielsen symphonies to a close with the composer’s sixth, most enigmatic symphony.

This is a night of contrasts, from John Foulds’s ecstatic symphonic poem April – England to Sibelius’s evocation of forest spirits, before Denis Kozhukhin performs Rachmaninov’s Fourth Piano Concerto. Though intended to express something ‘completely idyllic’, the idyll of Nielsen’s final symphony is infiltrated by irony, violence and doubt in the face of the composer’s failing health.
