Dutch singer Nynke’s inimitable style blends intense Mediterranean sounds – from fado to flamenco – with the elegant poetry of the historically rich Frisian language, spoken only in the northern part of the Netherlands. Usually performed in sacred spaces, her music is full of passion for language and poetry.

After three albums which have all charted in the Netherlands, Nynke presents her new work Alter – released this year on Crammed Discs – made in collaboration with acclaimed Spanish guitarist and producer Javier Limón (Buika, Mariza, Yasmin Levy).

Limón created a musical basis of flamenco rhythms and guitars, combining them with the characteristic percussion of Frisian percussionist and composer Sytze Pruiksma and the sound of the Noardske balke, an old traditional Frisian string instrument. This is how he describes the collaboration: ‘The music of the words in Frisian is very strong and in the songs you hear the sound of the landscape, the far sights, the huge sky and the green. Then there’s this exceptional voice; when Nynke starts to sing, something happens.’
