Following its celebrated first edition two years ago, the Mayor of London’s Shubbak festival – the city’s celebration of contemporary Arab art and culture – opens its 2013 edition with a double bill bringing together possibly Algeria’s two most outspoken musical rebels.

A rocking dervish whose rebel spirit is always tinged with oriental sensuality, rock’n’raï icon Rachid Taha made a much-awaited comeback this year with his 9th studio album Zoom, recorded with a stellar cast of guests including Mick Jones of The Clash - who will be joining him on stage.

Soulful yet steely singer-songwriter Souad Massi has been hailed as Maghreb's answer to Tracy Chapman. Capable of fusing everything from chaâbi to American folk rock and Portuguese fado, while mixing electric and acoustic instruments with her haunting vocals, Souad’s melancholic ballads bear the imprint of Algeria's troubled recent past.

'The French-Algerian star's rock'n'rai style offers a better bridge between cultures than any military option' ★★★★★ The Independent on Zoom
