Illuminating Britten is a three day celebration event featuring film screenings, talks, panel discussions and performances by Guildhall School musicians. Curated by John Bridcut
Beginning on the afternoon of Friday 8 November with a musical welcome and culminating with a celebratory lunch on Sunday 10 November, the weekend sees the Barbican and Guildhall School of Music & Drama join forces for concerts, films, mini-recitals and discussions featuring musicians who knew Britten personally or who have a special understanding of his music. Events will take place across the Barbican and Guildhall School buildings including our new cinemas on Silk Street and the new Milton Court Concert Hall.
Discussion sessions include: Britten reappraised, the composer in the community, Britten as performer, Britten and sexuality, Building a Britten library and Britten as Christian.
Throughout the weekend there will be performances by young artists from the Guildhall School, readings from Britten’s letters and diaries and ‘encounters with Britten’ – personal reflections on Britten from panelists and contributors.
A full schedule and details of speakers and panelists will be published at the end of May.
