This is the rescheduled concert from 9 April.

Mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and pianist Malcolm Martineau explore the intensely beautiful sound-world of songs by Schumann, Strauss and Alban Berg.

“She is a star of the first magnitude” wrote The Daily Telegraph of Latvian mezzo Elīna Garanča; but Garanča is also an artist of profound intelligence – demonstrated tonight in a song recital devoted to German romanticism, and supported on the piano by one of the world’s greatest exponents of the lieder repertoire.

Elīna Garanča’s operatic recitals have caused a sensation in previous seasons at the Barbican – but critics such as Rupert Christiansen have been quick to emphasise the “sharp intelligence to match her vocal technique”. For an artist who is, in her own words, driven by “the fascinating business of expressing your feelings by controlling your voice” it’s natural to be drawn to the lieder of Schumann and Richard Strauss, and in pianist Malcolm Martineau Garanca has an artistic partner of consummate expertise and insight. Berg’s impressionistic Seven Early Songs will take their joint artistry into a rich and poignant new sound-world.
