Bach’s cello suites demonstrate the level of sheer invention that their creator brought to his instrumental music, encompassing a vast spectrum of colours and moods. In this concert they are placed alongside cello suites by Benjamin Britten; unlike Bach’s, Britten’s movements are not drawn from the traditional French Suite, and feature everything from fugues and marches to folksong.
Change of artist Daniel Müller-Schott has had to withdraw from today’s Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert due to injury. We are most grateful to cellist Alban Gerhardt for agreeing to appear at short notice. The programme is very slightly revised from that originally published.
