The AAM’s Handel festival closes with an afternoon of events at the Foundling Museum, Britain’s first home for abandoned children. Handel was a governor and benefactor of the Foundling Hospital, and money raised by annual performances of Messiah provided vital funding for the hospital. The afternoon begins with a tour of the Museum, which includes an unrivalled collection of Handel memorabilia.

The evening concert celebrates the rich musical life of Handel and his London contemporaries. Whilst Handel’s operas and oratorios stole the limelight, much of the cut and thrust of musical innovation took place in a more intimate setting, and Handel played alongside, made friends and fell out with all the composers in this programme, creating an unrivalled musical ‘community’.

Before the concert, join an exclusive tour of the Museum, and hear Handel expert Edward Blakeman explore contemporary accounts of Handel’s life and music. Edward is author of the Faber Pocket Guide to Handel, and Editor, BBC Radio 3 and BBC Proms.
