Poulenc Les animaux modèles (suite with readings) Ravel L’enfant et les sortilèges
BBC Symphony Orchestra Stéphane Denève conductor Jean-Baptiste Barriére video projection Stephen Mangan actor Students from the Royal Academy of Music
To crown our opera theme this season, we present Ravel’s fantastical opera L’enfant et les sortilèges, in a specially devised concert version using live film, and performed by talented young singers from the Royal Academy of Music with Stéphane Denève. In a score teeming with invention, Ravel tells the magical story of a young boy driven to cruelty by boredom, who provokes the animals and objects around him to spring to life and conspire against him in a phantasmagorical parade. Wearing digital masks, the singers are transported into dreamlike virtual scenes on screens above the stage. Devised by Jean-Baptiste Barrière, this promises to be an exciting new way to experience Ravel’s colourful and comic masterpiece.
Poulenc’s charming musical bestiary from the ballet Les animaux modèles makes the perfect introduction. Based on the famous fables of French poet Jean de La Fontaine, Poulenc's score will be brought to life by actor Stephen Mangan, who intersperses readings of the fables, in English, among the orchestral movements.
