Stravinsky Apollon musagete Stravinsky Oedipus Rex
Sir John Eliot Gardiner conductor Jennifer Johnston Jocaste Stuart Skelton Oedipus Gidon Saks Creon Fanny Ardant Narrator Gentlemen of the Monteverdi Choir London Symphony Orchestra
The ancient Greek subject matter of Stravinsky’s Apollon musagète (Apollo, Leader of the Muses) hints at the ballet’s elegant and restrained neo-Classical style. Sergei Diaghilev, enamoured by the score’s classical beauty, described it as ‘music not of this world, but from somewhere above’. The opera Oedipus Rex, by contrast, was described by Stravinsky as an assemblage of ‘whatever came to hand’, from the sounds of Baroque oratorio and Italian opera to Wagner’s music dramas.
