Schubert Symphony No 8 ('Unfinished')
Brahms Violin Concerto

Manfred Honeck conductor
Nikolaj Znaider violin
London Symphony Orchestra

This concert also features a new work, Anahata by Eloise Nancie Gynn, an LSO Panufnik Composers Scheme commission, conducted by Nicholas Collon.

Schubert may not have a produced a final movement for his Eighth Symphony but the music he did write certainly wasn’t lacking – ‘A sweet stream of melodies, so crystal-clear that you can see every pebble on the bottom’  wrote one critic at its premiere. Brahms’s Violin Concerto is one of the most beautiful in the repertoire, especially the exquisite slow movement. Surprisingly, the composer wasn’t so keen, labelling it a ‘feeble adagio’!

Change of conductor

Sir Colin Davis has been recovering from illness since the autumn and as a result has not been able to appear on stage. In January and February he was much improved and has been preparing for, and very much looking forward to, a return to the podium for his concerts with the Orchestra and Nikolaj Znaider this March.

Unfortunately Sir Colin’s health has suffered a setback in the last week and his doctors have advised that he should not conduct for the time being. He has therefore had to withdraw from the concerts on 24 & 26 March (and those on 16 & 18 April – please see separate change note).

Sir Colin is deeply disappointed that he is not able to return at this time but hopes to be back on the Barbican stage in June.

Following this news, we are pleased to announce that Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck, Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and a specialist in Viennese repertoire, will now lead the Orchestra on 24 & 26 March.

The programme and soloist for the concerts will remain the same.
