Mozart Symphony No 41 ('Jupiter')
Mahler Des Knaben Wunderhorn

Manfred Honeck
conductor
Dorothea Röschmann soprano
Ian Bostridge tenor
London Symphony Orchestra

Mozart’s energetic final symphony is shrouded in mystery, with no clear idea of the origin of its nickname, who commissioned the work, or even whether it was performed in the composer’s lifetime. Mahler memorably uses the voice to great effect within many of his symphonies, the origins of which can be found in Des Knaben Wunderhorn, his collection of songs inspired by German folk poetry that tell of love, loss and childhood.

Change of conductor

Sir Colin Davis is recovering from a recent illness and has sadly had to withdraw from the concert. The programme will remain the same and Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck, Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, will now lead the Orchestra in Mozart’s Symphony No 41 and Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn . We are most grateful to him for stepping in at short notice.
