Vivier Zipangu Debussy La mer Stravinsky Firebird (complete)
Los Angeles Philharmonic Gustavo Dudamel conductor
A concert exploring colour. Claude Debussy re-imagined the possibilities of orchestral sound in his musical picture of the sea, La Mer. Suddenly the orchestra became beautiful – it could shimmer and glisten of its own accord, no longer compelled to discuss and dissect themes as the symphonic tradition dictated. Almost a century later Claude Vivier created his own exploration of colour in Zipangu, a mini orchestral kaleidoscope which forms a fitting prelude to the blazing orchestral combustions of Stravinsky’s The Firebird. This final concert in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s residency promises atmosphere, brilliance, heat and passion.
