Handel had a feeling Belshazzar was going to be a hit. He urged his librettist Charles Jennens to deliver more text as he worked on the piece in 1744, ‘it engages me warmly…and has given me opportunity to express some very particular ideas’ wrote the composer. Those ideas included a masterful handling of the multi-hued chorus and some of the most imaginative characterization Handel would conceive, all cradled in a work of immense dramatic sweep. William Christie has a way with this music like none other; he musters world-class soloists to join his own group Les Arts Florissants for a true musical feast.
The concert will finish at approximately 10.15pm
There will be a pre-concert talk with conductor William Christie and singer and broadcaster Catherine Bott in the hall from 17:45 – 18:15.
