Bach Cello Suite No 3 in C major BWV 1009 Bach Cello Suite No 6 in D major BWV 1012
Pieter Wispelwey cello
All that survives of the original manuscripts for Bach’s Cello Suites is the title page. The Suites themselves exist only as copies made by his second wife, Anna Magdalena and by musicians in and around Bach’s circle of friends. Based around the structure of a traditional dance suite, the great Spanish cellist Pablo Casals nicknamed Suite No 3 the ‘heroic’ suite, while Suite No 6 was hailed by cellist Rostropovich as ‘a symphony for solo cello’ because of its vast virtuosic scope.
