After all the adventures of the season the final concert returns to romanticism. Josef Suk's The Ripening portrays 'the joys and tragic shadows of life' and at the end brings in a wordless chorus to sing a 'hymn of affirmation'. Brahms's sunny Violin Concerto also ends with an affirmation, but it's more of an earthy dance than a hymn.
