The first concert in the BBC SO’s Sibelius cycle is steeped in Finnish nature and mysticism. The all-creating nature-spirit is hymned in Sibelius’s Luonnotar, and Kaija Saariaho’s recent song-cycle evokes Finland’s snowy nights and fleeting springtime. Arnold Bax’s evocation of Atlantic storminess may seem distant but there’s an emotional affinity; while Sibelius’s Third Symphony illuminates the Northern ambience with Italianate grace.
