Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 3 Bruckner Symphony No 4, ‘Romantic’ BBC Symphony Orchestra Jiří Bělohlávek conductor Leif Ove Andsnes piano
The season opens with two romantic masterpieces. Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto lay in the shadow of the more famous second concerto for decades, but its unabashed lyricism and spontaneity make it just as irresistible. Bruckner actually dubbed his Fourth Symphony the ‘Romantic’, and it summons up horn-drenched romantic scenes of medieval castles, hare-hunting and a folk-festival.
